These results are estimates, not predictions. They're calculated from the figures you entered and assume your rate of return and inflation rate hold steady every year, which real markets don't do. Change any input and the result changes. Use this to compare scenarios, not to plan around a specific number.

Using the Kapitalwise RMD Calculator

Enter your current age, account balance as of December 31 of the previous year, expected rate of return, and marital status and spouse's age if applicable. The calculator shows this year's required minimum distribution.

Current Age

Current age determines whether you have reached RMD age and which life expectancy factor applies to your withdrawal.

Account Balance

Account balance is the value of your retirement account as of December 31 of the previous year.

Expected Rate of Return

Expected rate of return is used to project your account balance and future RMDs in later years.

Marital Status and Spouse's Age

Marital status and spouse's age may affect your life expectancy factor if your spouse is more than 10 years younger than you.

When RMDs Start

RMD age is 73 if you were born between 1951 and 1959, and 75 if you were born in 1960 or later.

How RMDs Are Calculated

Your RMD is your account balance divided by a life expectancy factor from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table.

Accounts Subject to RMDs

Traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and similar pre-tax accounts are subject to RMDs. Roth IRAs are not, unless inherited.

Penalty for Missing an RMD

Missing an RMD results in a 25% excise tax on the amount not withdrawn, reduced to 10% if corrected within two years.

What are RMDs?

A required minimum distribution, or RMD, is the minimum amount the IRS requires you to withdraw each year from most pre-tax retirement accounts once you reach RMD age. RMDs exist because pre-tax retirement accounts grow without being taxed, and the IRS requires withdrawals so it can eventually collect income tax on that money.

RMDs apply to accounts such as traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and 403(b)s. Roth IRAs are not subject to RMDs during the original owner's lifetime.

Your RMD amount is recalculated every year, based on your account balance as of December 31 of the previous year and a life expectancy factor from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table. As your balance and life expectancy factor both change, your required withdrawal changes with them.

You can take an RMD as a lump sum or in smaller withdrawals throughout the year, as long as the total amount is withdrawn by December 31. Withdrawals count as ordinary taxable income in the year they're taken, which can affect your tax bracket.
